Dr. Fetterolf Education and Training

Frank Fetterolf, M.D., is a board-certified psychiatrist and member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Born in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA), athletic competition played a significant role in his formative years. He was recruited to compete in Division I-A Track & Field as a javelin thrower for Cornell University. Piqued by interdisciplinary cognitive studies ranging from neurobiology of behavior to the philosophy of mind, he developed an interest in the intersection of clinical neuroscience and the law.

He completed medical school at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM), where he cared for his neighbors in NEPA. Subsequently, he matched in psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

During his residency, he engaged in numerous activities that combined psychiatry and the law. He learned how to assess competency to stand trial at the Allegheny Behavioral Unit, participated in a violence risk consultation team, volunteered as a psychiatric expert witness for law student mock trials, and attended the forensic psychiatry review course at an annual AAPL meeting.

After completing his training and becoming board-certified in psychiatry, he began providing forensic evaluations to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) for criminal matters related to trial competency and criminal responsibility. Building on the comprehensive treatment experience in his private clinical practice, he also has worked on various civil case matters involving disability, fitness for duty, psychological injury, violence risk assessments, and workplace harassment—descrimination.
